WORLD ELDER ABUSE AWARENESS DAY

Combatting Elder Abuse

Today is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day [WEAAD].
Elder abuse is a global issue which often occurs silently, in many instances, with little acknowledgement or response. Elder abuse can take various forms including; financial, physical, psychological, emotional, sexual abuse, or neglect. No older person should be subjected to any form of abuse.

As many countries are experiencing rapidly ageing populations, elder abuse is predicted to rise.
In fact a prevalence study undertaken last year showed that 15% of people aged over 65 reported experiencing abuse over the last 12 months*.
As such, elder abuse demands a global multifaceted response, one which focuses on protecting the rights of older people.

The purpose of WEAAD is to expose the issue, ask communities to speak out about the problem and for countries to create policies that foster respect for older people.

CELEBRATING MEN'S HEALTH WEEK
13 - 19 JUNE 2022

This week we celebrate Men's Health Week, where the aim is to raise awareness about preventable health problems in men of all ages and provoke thought and discussion about what needs to be done to improve men's health.

The theme of Men's Health Week 2022 is Building Healthy Environments for Men and Boys - focusing on creating physically, mentally and emotionally healthy environments in the home, workplace and in social settings. Below we feature Arthur McConnochie, who started his health and fitness journey with Strength for Life and has never looked back!

"In 2001 I was told that I needed 2 knee replacements. I found a Chiropractor who worked on knees and he helped me to improve my knees to avoid the operations but I still had restrictions. I saw an advertisement for Strength for Life at a local gym, Burnfit Studio. I started the program doing 1 session a week. I started to notice some improvement in my knees and my fitness so I increased the sessions to 3 times a week.

As my fitness improved I took on 2 extra fitness classes. At this stage I had lost 5kg. I then did a diet and exercise program with Burnfit and  lost a further 13kg. COVID-19 arrived and Burnfit Studio did online sessions and I did all of them including sessions I hadn't tried before - and  loved them.

When the gym reopened I decided to do all the sessions. I am now fitter, stronger and have better posture than I have for at least 20 years. All of this because I took the time to check out Strength for Life*. I never thought I would be a gym junkie at the age of 71 and doing 17 sessions per week. I love it!!!"
Arthur McConnochie

* Strength for Life provided Arthur with the start he needed for his fitness journey! SFL sessions are generally recommended 2-3 times per week, but Arthur has graduated to a full gym member and accesses other sessions outside of the SFL Program.

SELF-MANAGING A HOME CARE PACKAGE

We’ve had several phone calls recently from people concerned with the fees they are paying for the administration and case management of their home care packages.

Self-management is an option, but it’s not for everyone.

COTA Australia has resources on their website here explaining the self-management process. There is a short video on home care package self-management and two videos showcasing the real-life experiences of people who are themselves self-managing, or managing for the person they care for. There is also a consumer guide to self-management and a self-management toolkit.

Some of the reported benefits of self-managing a home care package include:

·  Choice of support workers

·  An active input into care planning

·  The ability to directly purchase care and services

·  Financial transparency

·  Access to help with self-managing when and if needed.

If you choose to self-manage a home care package, you will need to find a provider who can host your home care package.

How to find Home Care Package Providers who host self-managed home care packages

1. To find providers in your local area, go to the My Aged Care website here - Find a provider that’s right for you

2. In the ‘Where are you looking?’ section, type in your postcode.

3. In the ‘Pick your options and search’ section, click on the ‘Care type’ box- tick ‘A Home Care Package’ from the drop-down menu, then click ‘Done’.

4. Then click on the ‘Services’ box and tick the level of home care package you require and click ‘Done’.

5. Then click on the ‘More’ box and tick ‘With availability’ and ‘That allow self-managed packages’ boxes and click ‘Done’. Then click on the ‘Search’ box.

A list of providers will then be displayed who can be called to ask if they can provide the service you require. You can click on the name of the provider to obtain more details.

If you do not have access to a computer, you may like to call My Aged Care on 1800 200 422 and request that they send you a copy of the list.

For more information on aged care support, visit the Let's Talk Aged Care section of our website, here.

A DIGITAL LITERACY PROGRAM FOR ADULTS IN SA PUBLIC LIBRARIES

The ‘being digital’ program is delivered through public libraries across the state to ensure every South Australian has digital access and opportunities to develop skills needed to participate in the digital world.

Members of the community can access the website here at or simply drop in to their local library to find out what’s on offer.

SA Libraries invest significant time and effort to build digital literacy skills in their communities, and this program is designed to support libraries to increase their efforts. The program is focused on the ‘digital basics’ (e.g., being safe online) to help people participate with confidence in today’s digital world.

HELP MAKE A DIFFERENCE

For 73 year old Michael Bull, deciding to become a volunteer with the Department for Child Protection was life-changing. Three and a half years ago he started volunteering at the suggestion of his daughter, who is a social worker.

Michael volunteers in DCP’s Noarlunga office four days each week, mostly transporting children and young people to appointments. “My daughter was on to me for over two years before I started to volunteer with the DCP and my only regret is that I should have done it earlier,’’ he says. Recently Mr Bull was lost for words when the actions of a young girl, who he regularly transports, brought tears to his eyes. One morning after school drop off, the teacher asked him to stay for the school assembly. “When the assembly had finished, one of the girl’s classmates came up to us with her mother and said, ‘hi this is my mum,’’ he says. “Before I had chance to reply, the young girl that I was with came out with, ‘hi this is my Michael’. “Well, I was completely stuck for words and had tears in my eyes and a lump the size of a football in my throat.”

The Department for Child Protection runs training sessions every six weeks at its offices across the state. To find out how you can make an impact on a child or young person’s life click here.
