COTA SA'S PODCAST SERIES
VOICES ON AGEING: SOCIAL CONNECTIONS

Episode 2 - The Power of a Chat

Colin has always been active with hobbies and in groups from playing in the church band to painting community murals. Now 91 years of age Colin reflects on the cultural shift around people taking the time to have a conversation, and on the group he has joined that offers this called Bunch of Blokes.

Listen to Colin’s Voices on Ageing episode now, or any of the six episodes sharing personal stories of finding new social connections on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts etc... or COTA Social Connections webpage.

COTA SA’s podcast ‘Voices on Ageing’ shares the stories of six people who participated in our Social Connections project designed to help people find their mojo, reconnect with others, and get back into life after a period loneliness or social isolation. We hope that their stories will inspire and empower others to make changes in their own lives.

How do you feel about climate change?

NEW VILLAGE HUB OPERATING IN
THE SOUTHERN FLEURIEU

People in the southern Fleurieu region of South Australia will be supported to live and age well in the community, with the establishment of COTA SA’s “Goolwa Victor Harbor Village Hub (GVHVH)”.

The Village Hub will offer peer-to-peer volunteering and support, ageing well activities and events, information about accessing aged care services, advocacy and representation, as well as social opportunities. The Hub will have a strong link with the COTA SA Goolwa Victor Harbor Advisory Group, a group established 2 years ago to assist with advocating on behalf of this community which boasts one of the largest percentages of residents aged over 65, in Australia.

The Hub will draw its members from older people living in the Southern Fleurieu, including Goolwa, Victor Harbor, Port Elliot, Middleton, Hindmarsh Island, Encounter Bay, McCracken and Hayborough.

COTA SA will establish the Hub, including setting up a governance structure, an activity program, volunteer training, and member recruitment during the first two years, before transitioning to management by its members in the third year. COTA SA recently appointed Desmond Ford as the Village Hub Manager and he will work closely with a Steering Group (established in November 2021) to oversee the establishment of the hub. Marilyn Henderson, a long-standing volunteer with COTA SA and an elected member of the Victor Harbor Council, was voted Chairperson of the Steering Committee.

Establishing the Goolwa Victor Harbor Village Hub will harness the strengths, energy and passion of older people to create a grassroots, community-owned and led movement that will improve the ageing experience for themselves and their peers.

Over the coming months local people will be invited to connect with the new Hub and help to shape what it might look like. The Steering Committee members will be out and about to discuss the hub with locals, to engage their interest and identify what they would like to see the hub doing.

Supported by the Australian Government Department of Social Services. Go to www.dss.gov.au for more information. The Goolwa Victor Harbor Village Hub is partnering with Independent Living Australia (iLA) who are the Village Hubs National Grant Manager.

For further information about the Village Hub email villagehub@cotasa.org,au or call Desmond Ford on 8224 5536.

HUNGARIAN COMMUNITY
ENLIVENED AND INVIGORATED

COTA SA is delighted that Strength for Life sessions have now started at Hungarian Caritas in Norwood. After several months of planning the day for the first session arrived, and so did the joyful enthusiasm of 12 community members who took their first steps towards improving their strength, balance, fitness and general health and wellbeing.

This wonderful development would not have been made possible without the support, determination and encouragement from Akos Nagy, President of Hungarian Caritas, the leadership and expertise of Maria Voulgarakis, (fitness instructor, Functional for Life) and the community members themselves. On the first day Maria spent some time helping the community members familiarise themselves with the various pieces of equipment and exercises to enable a smooth transition to the start of their tailored programs. Congratulations Hungarian Caritas!

‘Every day is another chance to get stronger, to eat better, to live healthier, and to be the best version of you.’Unknown
